Modern dance and technology are an exciting pair - and have been for a long time. Both dance and technology are continually evolving, and so is their relationship. One of the more recent advancements in their relationship is the ability to use drones for dance.

For example, here is a piece created by elevenplay×Rhizomatiks. They used drones in two different ways: the drones have choreographed and programmed movements, and there are parts of the piece where the drones track and respond to the movement of the dancers.

Cirque du Soleil also worked with drones. In the following film, the drones dance around a single performer. The film is framed with a quote from Arthur C. Clarke: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." - and the use of drones in their film certainly does look like magic.

Now that we've seen dancing drones (and computers choreographed to film dance and dancing robots), what's next?

The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
— Arthur C. Clarke
